My name is Yuhong Gao, and I am originally from Beijing, China. Growing up, I was an avid reader of Greek mythology picture books, fascinated by the dramatic and thought-provoking interactions between humans and gods. In June 2026, I graduated from the University of Toronto with a double major in History and the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology.
During my time at UofT, I explored a wide range of historical subjects—from vegetarian culture in North America and the history of religion in Europe, to the modern Chinese intellectual revolution. Time and again, I observed the intricate, mutually constitutive relationship between scientific advancement and social development, which shaped my academic trajectory. Guided by my linguistic and cultural background, my focus crystallized during my senior year around the history of science in modern China. I am particularly interested in exploring how the concept of "science" (科学) was introduced to China, how it was historically constructed and reshaped across different social classes, and how this "myth" continues to be narrated by the Chinese public today.
