Dissertation

Sasha studied the development of China’s ethnic policies and conceptions of nationalism, writing his dissertation on the early PRC’s policies towards incorporating Tibet into the Chinese state. Prior to entering the dual degree program, he received his bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Chicago, and spent several years working in China, where he learnt Mandarin.

As a political analyst and commentator, he writes for a variety of international publications, and advises media organizations and political campaigns on messaging and strategies for countering China’s influence. With extensive non-profit management experience, Sasha advises and consults for NGOs and human rights organizations.

In addition to English and Mandarin Chinese, Sasha is proficient in Italian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, and is conversational in Uyghur.
