Ryan Singsank is a PhD student in international history and the Norman A. Graebner Bicentennial Fellow in Diplomatic History at the University of Virginia. His research explores the diplomatic, military, and security relationships between the United States and Western Europe during the late twentieth century. Ryan's current projects examine competing visions for the future of Europe's security architecture during the transition from the Cold War to the post-Cold War era.
As part of his work, Ryan conducts extensive archival research on both sides of the Atlantic and is committed to incorporating newly declassified and underutilized sources. This work began as part of Ryan's dual-degree dissertation, entitled "Always on Alert: The Live Oak Planning Group the Defense of West Berlin, 1983-90," which explored the American, British, French, and West German efforts to defend West Berlin during the late Cold War.
After graduating from the Columbia-LSE program and prior to starting his PhD, Ryan was a Research Associate at the O’Brien Notre Dame International Security Center (ONDISC) at the University of Notre Dame, where he assisted with the Hans J. Morgenthau Fellowship.
