Marcus Liu

Dissertation

Building on his research during the CU/LSE master’s program, Marcus is now pursuing a PhD in History at King’s College London, specializing in Jewish life in modern China and Chinese perceptions of Jews.

At Columbia and LSE, he focused on transnational intellectual history and memory politics. An adapted version of his dissertation, which addresses historical Chinese antisemitism and its contemporary manifestations, was published in the 2024 Jahrbuch für Antisemitismusforschung. With an emphasis on semi-colonialism and Chinese nationalism, he has examined the political dimensions of Shanghai’s Jewish refugee community since his undergraduate studies at Pomona College in California.

Before entering academia, he served as a history teacher and head of the social science department at a secondary school, where he taught, developed curricula and led pedagogical initiatives.
