Katherine Nickols

Dissertation

Originally born in Manhattan, Katherine returns to New York City to complete her MA/MSc. She attended middle school outside Brussels, and high school outside London. In May 2017, she completed her undergraduate studies at Bryn Mawr College, majoring in History and minoring in Italian. Her senior thesis examined the MOVE bombing of May 13, 1985. During this process, she spent many days in the Temple University archives, finding a handwritten letter by Ramona Africa (leader of MOVE and the only surviving adult from the bombing). In this letter, Ramona highlighted the legal inconsistencies and unlawful police behavior MOVE faced, including the sentencing of nine MOVE members to 30-100 years for third-degree murder for the shooting of a police officer in 1978, with no conclusive evidence.

She believes in the ethical obligations, as well as intellectual, for historians. Now, more than ever, with the unprecedentedly rapid dissemination of information by social media, History has never been more important.
