Research Interest

Greetings! My name is Nicholas Natzke, and I graduated from the University of Michigan in 2020 with a major in Political Science and minor in Middle East Studies. Coming from a very rural community in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, I have used history and social science as a way to connect myself to the world, and more importantly, understand the vast diversity and versatility of humanity when confronted with change and conflict.

Starting in 2022, I had the opportunity to do a Fulbright program in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where I was able to conduct research relating to public opinion and youth attitudes towards social movements, government policies, and most importantly, developments in Mongolia since the end of the Socialist Era.

At Columbia and LSE, I intend to expand my knowledge and skill set in order to further explore historical and political topics across Central Asia. Besides Central Asian history, my academic interests include linguistic history and preservation, Islamic studies, and human migration.

Outside of the classroom, I love to explore new places, read novels, and use Duolingo.
