Matthew graduated with honors from UCLA, where he conducted research on the telegraph and its role in enabling vertical integration as a business model in the nineteenth century.
At Columbia and the London School of Economics, he became interested in the impact of commodity markets on government policy, studying how governments influence (and attempt to influence) socioeconomic activity in response to market changes.
