Lotte Houwink ten Cate

Lotte Houwink ten Cate is a historian of modern Europe, with broad interests in intellectual and social history, and the history of sexuality. She is a 2023-2025 Past & Present Postdoc Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research in London. Her current research examines 1970s feminist thought and praxis, and the transformation of intimate violence—in public perception, social science, and the law—from a private matter to a state concern. Lotte received her Ph.D. in history from Columbia University in New York, a dual M.A./M.Sc. in international and world history from Columbia and the London School of Economics, and a B.A. in history and literary studies from Amsterdam University College. 

Her academic writing has appeared in or is forthcoming in Global Intellectual History, CSSAAME, New German CritiqueGerman Politics and Society, and several edited collections. Alongside her academic work, she is writing a trade book about the historical and contemporary tensions between feminism and heterosexuality. She frequently contributes essays to the Dutch newspaper NRC
