Lindsay Clarke

Dissertation

Lindsay graduated from Wesleyan University with a BA in Sociology and French Studies, focusing her studies on inter-imperial rivalries in post-colonial Cameroon. Upon graduating from Wesleyan, she founded Breaking Ground (www.breaking-ground.org), a nonprofit that works in Cameroon to enable Cameroonians to address the self-identified needs of their communities by supporting locally-initiated sustainable solutions. Based in Portland, Maine, Lindsay served as Executive Director of Breaking Ground for four years while also teaching middle school history and French. Guided by her interest in sustainable development in Africa, Lindsay wrote her dissertation on state policies towards nomad sedentarization in post-colonial Mali, as examined through the lens of an American Quaker organization's development project in the 1970s. Having returned to Maine, Lindsay is once again teaching middle and high school history and French at Portland's Waynflete School. She continues to serve as Breaking Ground's Chair of the Board of Directors.
