Jens started the Columbia University/London School of Economics dual-degree program in International and World History in 2010. For his BA (summa cum laude), he studied at Utrecht University and the University of California at San Diego, concentrating on international relations, law, and history. His aim is to approach history from an international and interdisciplinary perspective. His current research interest is energy policy and and its impact on post-WWII history. For his final thesis, he researched the role of the Netherlands in the 1973-4 Oil Crisis, and the crisis' wider implications for the international oil industry.
