Dissertation

Chen graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame du Lac, with a BA in History, in 2015. He wrote his undergraduate honors thesis on the representations of change in Chile and Chinese-Chilean relations in the Chinese state newspaper during the ’70s, when both countries went through drastic ideological shifts. The paper attempts to cast light on the media’s role in shaping the Chinese people’s perception of themselves in relation to the world.

Chen is generally interested in transitional places and time periods, similar to his hometown Beijing, where different cultures, faiths, ideologies and notions of progress conflict and converge. Meanwhile, he keeps a distant dream of becoming an indie game developer someday.
