Born and raised in the Netherlands, Maarten graduated with first class honours and a History bachelors from St Peters College, University of Oxford in 2021. During his undergraduate studies he wrote his thesis on Dutch communities in Republican Era Chinese treaty ports, making use of a combination of archival, newspaper and personal sources. Maarten is eager to pursue his research interest regarding the transnational nature of European imperialism in East Asia during the interwar period. He has an affinity for working with personal sources and ego-documents to uncover both the influences and experiences of transnational groups in imperial networks. Outside his studies Maarten is engaged in student politics to improve the position of Dutch international students.
