Research Interest

My name is Aodamar Owens Deane, born in London to Irish parents and raised in Ireland, the US, and Belgium. I graduated from University College Dublin in 2021 with a first-class BA in History and Economics. I spent my Erasmus year studying through French and English in Sciences Po, Paris, and this is truly where my love for global history grew. Back in UCD, during my final year, I wrote two research papers, one on gendered perspectives of the North China famine, with special attention to Ireland, and the other on the Timorese resistance to Indonesian colonialism. More generally, my research interests include transnational history, (especially in relation to Ireland), anti-colonial thought, women’s history, and historiography more broadly.

I know that much like my experience in Sciences Po, Columbia/LSE will allow me the option to access areas of History unfamiliar to me, as well as new and exciting sources and archives which aren’t available in Ireland. Since graduating, I have worked on publishing some of my academic work, as well as working both front and back of house in the food industry – cooking being one of my main hobbies. Other interests of mine include cycling, walking and politics. I am a fluent Irish speaker.
