What kind of a degree is this?

The dual MA/MSc in International and World History is a program of two institutions: the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University and the London School of Economics.

Which division of Columbia University awards the MA in International and World History? When will I receive the degree?

The MA degree is awarded after both years of the program have been successfully completed.  The MA degree is awarded by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the October degree conferral after all program requirements have been met.

How many students are in the program? How many apply?

Academic Year 2008-09 will welcome the first entering class of the two-year program.  We expect that fewer than ten students will be part of the first incoming class.

What are the prerequisites for admission? Can I still apply if I didn’t major in History as an undergraduate?

Applicants should have a good record of academic performance in their undergraduate institution. Foreign language proficiency is helpful but not required.  The dual MA Program in International and World History welcomes applicants from History and other disciplines.

Who are the faculty involved with this program? How can I contact them to tell them about my research interests?

Please contact the MA Program office first; an updated listing of relevant faculty and researchers is available on the Faculty page.

I am currently enrolled in/I have already completed a MA degree program. Can this shorten my time in the dual degree program?

A set curriculum has already been established for the program. All enrolled students must complete all coursework in both years of the program in order to receive the degrees. It is not possible to complete only one year of the program, and to receive only one degree.

Is it good or bad for my application that I have been working, and out of college, for several years?

Work experience is considered desirable, although the program will also accept students who are currently finishing their undergraduate studies. Students are selected for admission based on academic background and related work experience.  The dual MA Program in International and World History welcomes applications from all academic backgrounds.

Can I submit letters of reference from my employer instead of from former professors?

You are free to submit the references that you believe best support your application. The committee would prefer at least two academic references but recognizes that professionals who have worked for several years may have difficulty obtaining references from their undergraduate studies. In those cases, relevant professional references are certainly acceptable, but at least one reference from a professor who knows your work is still preferred.

References can be submitted through the online application electronic option, or through the mail to the Admissions Office of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
